I converted a week after September 11th, 2001

“I converted a week after September 11th, 2001. It was a Friday. I converted when there was no YouTube, no Facebook, no Twitter, no Instagram, no snap chat, there wasn’t even MySpace.

There was MSN Messenger though, I know y’all remember that. That week before September 11th before I converted, globally, Islam and Muslims were viewed quite differently than they were afterward. That date was when stuff really kinda hit the fan for Muslims around the world and at home in small time Oakville too.

Alhamdulillah 3 older siblings in my family converted before me. The oldest converted back in 1999 (the last millennia) and gave dawah to the family. He actually started giving dawah to me when I was 13 and everything within Islam resonated with me. It answered all of the questions I had, especially pertaining to what would happen to me when I die.

I read a bit more about Islam on my own at my school library and decided the Friday after 9/11 to go to Coopers masjid to convert. Now my mum was a little hysterical about the whole Islam thing cause of 9/11, so I told her I was going to the movies that Friday night, but I was actually going to the masjid to become Muslim”.

Something strange happened on the way there. The city bus I took to the masjid followed a route in an industrial area. So not many people took that route. I was the only person on the bus and a man in a lowered hat covering his eyes got on the bus.

He came and sat beside me, even though the bus was completely empty! He asks me: “Where are you going tonight?” Me being excited and a bit naive say: “I’m going to become Muslim.” He says to me: “Why would you want to do that?” He kept trying to talk me out of it. I immediately got off the bus and started walking toward the masjid.

I told my brothers who were waiting for me at the masjid, and they said it was most likely Shaytann. Allah knows best, but Shaytann always makes his last push to prevent anyone from doing, this is especially true when people are trying to convert and when people are on their death bed. May Allah guide and protect us.”
